The Role of Community Councils

There are two tiers of Local Government in Johnston - District (or Borough) Council, and Community Council. Each tier has distinct responsibilities and works together to serve the needs of residents.

Community Councils represent the first tier of local government - the level closest to the community.

Local Authorities - Who Does What? Community Councils - Tier 1

They provide valuable local insight and are increasingly taking on more community-focused responsibilities. These can include:

  • Supporting local events and community groups
  • Managing assets such as community centres, play areas, and noticeboards
  • Reporting local issues like potholes, littering, and dog fouling
  • Advocating for the needs and interests of residents to higher-tier authorities

They play an essential role in making their communities better places to live, work, and visit.

County Councils - Tier 2

Johnston Community Council comes under Pembrokeshire County Council who has responsibility for:

  • Collection of council tax and business rates
  • Refuse, recycling, and litter collection
  • Housing services and homelessness support
  • Planning applications and local development
  • Environmental health, including noise and animal nuisances
  • Maintenance of parks, play areas, and open spaces
  • Management of allotments

Johnston Community Council

There are 2 tiers of Local Government covering the Johnston village area - Pembrokeshire County Council and Johnston Community Council. Councils are made up of individual Councillors, who are elected to serve the needs of their community. Community Councils represents the first tier of Local Government - the tier closest to local residents.

JOHNSTON is a popular village measuring just over a mile long, situated on the A4076 between Haverfordwest and Milford Haven. Founded as a small farming and mining Village, the population has grown from just 99 in 1801 to over 2000 today. Johnston boasts wide-ranging amenities, including Off-Licence Fruit & Veg Shop, Post Office, Bakery, Doctor's Surgery, Fish & Chip Shop, Indian Restaurant, Chinese Take-Away, Fishmonger, 24 hour Petrol Station, Hairdressing Salon, Chemist and 3 MoT Garages. Also, there is a Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon) Church, a Baptist Chapel, and St. Peter's Anglican Church. There are four pubs - The Legends Inn & Restaurant, The Silverdale Hotel & Restaurant, The Windsor Hotel & Restaurant, and The Railway Inn.

Johnston is well-connected via public transport. Buses run regularly to Haverfordwest, Milford Haven, Pembroke, Pembroke Dock, Neyland and Tenby. Johnston railway station is on the main line between Milford Haven, Haverfordwest, Swansea, Cardiff and London.
